I'll try to answer that question in Lay man's terms. It's an invasive little mussel passed around from lake to lake like a germ. (the Colorado river is infested with them) They do 2 things once they get into a body of water. They start to filter the water and sorta change it a bit. (not necessary a death blow to the water) Some fish actually thrive on eating them as Ifishtoolittle mentioned. (that's why all those big Red ear sunfish suddenly started popping up) But the big thing lake operators fear is they grow on all the underground equipment. (making a mess of it) Which has to be cleaned quite often and that get's expensive!
