    Default Western Pride Squid 2/17/10

Short Report... Decided to go out for the squid as we do every year around this time. Hopped on the western pride out of daveys locker with a buddy of mine. got to the first spot less than 20 mins. from the harbor, about 7 boats around us and slow pickens for about an hour. Captain decided to go out deeper to since it was pretty slow. Get to the 2nd spot and it was worst than the 1st. I don't remember anyone gettin one. Then he tell us he's going to move to 1200 ft and I'm hoping it's not one of those trips where the captn tells you, "you shoulda been here the night before".... He literally moves the boat only about 50 feet from the 2nd spot and marks a crapload of squid. for the next hour and half or so, the boat caught about 150. Everyone was hooked up at the same time and A LOT of laughs were shared. I got 5 and my buddy got 2 in that short frenzy. Squid were about 20 to 40 lbs. Time to go grill some for the Laker Game!

    Peace Tight Lines

    Very Cool! P{ost some pics.
We went out last night on the same boat and that's the excuse we got. "you should of been here yesterday". Boat only caught about 20 total and the captain kept blaming the passengers for not going deep enough. I found that funny. The whole boat wasn't hooking up and the captain blames us. What a tool.

    Bassbutcher,

Thanks for the post, I am glad you enjoyed your trip and were able to bring home a number of squid. You gotta love fishing and how the littlest changes in depth and or location can mean a world of difference.

We hope to see you this season,
    Thanks Again,

    geoliquid,
I am sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your trip, I am even more sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience on the boat. I do stand by our captains and crew as they are out there rain or shine, day in and day out, and unfortunately we cannot catch every trip. I do appreciate your post and your insight. If there is anything that I can do for you please let me know and we hope to see you back this season.

    Hi DaveysLocker,

Glad to see someone speaking for the (any) landing. When the skipper goes to 1200 feet, how deep would one actually expect to drop down typically.? Maybe what I'm trying to ask is what's the maximum depth expected to fish the Squid here in our coastal inshore areas and or canyons?

    Thanks,

    JapanRon

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

Murrieta Angler, not too big of a fan squidding either, a lot of work gettin that big jig back up and once you're hooked up it's like reelin in a trash bag!, but a buddy of mine does make some killer calamari!

JapanRon, from all the times i've gone squidding, I've caught em from 1000 ft to close to the surface. I usually use my JX 2speed and fill it up with about 400-500 yards of straight braid. Hope that helps a little.
