Took the Kolomona out Friday for a "local" offshore trip out of Dana Point. Crew members Sid, Franky, Sonny and Chi joined the ride. We heard there were still a few dorado around, along with a chance at a marlin or even a wahoo. We set out for the 267 bank around 6am and started trolling a couple marlin lures along with some large rapalas and halcos for wahoo. We stopped and fished on around a dozen kelp paddies, some had tons of micro 1-2 pound yellowtail on them, although we did lose one around 15 pounds right at the boat. We found one paddy that had a few dorado on it. I was lucky enough to hook one and Franky did a great job on the gaff, putting the first Dorado of the season on the deck of the Kolo! We hit the paddy a few more times but the remaining 2 that we saw would not touch anything with a hook in it. Did some more trolling but no luck on the marlin or wahoo so we pointed the boat towards the kelp off San Onofre for a shot at some coastal yellowtail. We ended up catching a few more micro yellows and bonito. I noticed Sid was bent on something solid so I grabbed the gaff and after a few seconds a 20# halibut comes up! It didn't even know it was hooked and I stuck the gaff in him before he could figure it out! We fished around for another hour or so but it was getting late so we headed in. Another good trip on the Kolo. Thanks for joining me guys, hopefully we'll put a few more dodo on board before the season is over!
