Took the Kolo down to San Diego again, this time with crew members Sid, Nick and Mario. We did the usual, launch the night before, catch bait and head out, arriving on the grounds just at daybreak. I took the first shift driving and then got a few hours sleep while Sid finished up. We arrived around 6 am and find the Mexican seiner fleet working. There were several tuna pens, seine boats, helicopters, and a few San Diego party boats working about a 5 mile block. It wasn't long before we saw tuna breaking on the surface and shortly after that, our first jig strike! It came off but we got bit again about 10 minutes later and Sid reels in the first tuna of 2014 aboard the Kolomona! We are now in the zone and start getting jig strikes every 20 minutes or so. The pink and white seemed to be the hot feather, followed by mex flag and rapalas. We had good action for a few hours, then it came to a lull. With gas getting low, we started trolling towards home. We ended up with 6 yellowfin tuna and then found a kelp paddy on the way home and added 2 yellowtail. Much thanks to Sid, Nick, and Mario for joining me on another great trip. I hope to do it again sometime soon.
