Got sick to the stomach reading the great tuna reports for the last time! Hadn't been out for exotics on a sportboat for 3-4 years....so I had to go while the gettin' was good....and it was GOOOOD!
Decided to avoid the crowds at H&M, Point Loma & Fisherman's. Headed to Mission Bay Sportfishing. For those of you that do not know, Hyatt owns the landing now and boy is it POSH!
Got on the Dominator with only 17 guys aboard. Cool, I love light loads! We headed out a few minutes late but I eventually understood that we were not in any hurry when I heard the captain shut down just a few hours after we were out of the harbor. I awoke in the grey to see a fleet of Mexican seiners surrounding 2 tuna pens. We were on the lower 302.
The water was flat and the skies were O/C. It just keeps getting better, huh?
Once we got under way and started the trolling rotation (I do not troll) were didn't move for more than 3 minutes when ZIIIIING! "HOOK UP!!!" and then ZIIING, ZIIIIN, ZIIIING!!! All 4 troll rods were bendo. I was waiting for this with swimbait rod in hand and instantly dropped back for a slide action bite. and of course, AHHHH! I am on! Got my swimbait tuna!
This was a school of Albies. It was game on for about 15-20 minutes. At first the whole boat was bent. I think almost everyone got a fish out of that. I got a second fish on bait before it was over. Both of mine were in the low 20 pound class but there was three 40+ pounders taken, one eventually ending up the jackpot fish.
After that, we stopped on paddy after paddy, getting a few Dodos or Yellows or nill.
Lots of small boat traffic showing up now. We shared some paddys with them. The last paddy of the day was a grande and it was loaded!
BFT and Dodos galore. I got a firecracker, a BFT and 3 or 4 Dodos off this one. The BFT's were 15-20 pounds, the yellows were up to almost 30 pounds and the Dodos were 5-10 pounds. There was also a few YFT on this kelp, one was pushing 30 pounds.
I ended up with 3 Ablies, 1 BFT, I Yellow and 5 Dodos for my efforts. Total catch for the boat was:
23 Ablies
22 BFT
1 small Mako
21 Dodos
4 YFT
14 Yellows
