  Lower Sacramento River #2

Location and Directions:

The Lower Sacramento River (from Anderson to Dairyville, including Red Bluff) is located in Shasta and Tehama counties. From Sacramento, take I-5 North to Red Bluff. Several roads are available to access the river from Red Bluff to Anderson, depending on which section you want to visit. (see map)

General Info:

This section of the river contains many turns, bends, holes, and riffles - ideal for fishing. Most of the land surrounding this section is privately owned, making foot access difficult. There are some public access areas around Dairyville, Bend, Balls Ferry, and Anderson areas. Shasta-Cascade Wonderland Assoc. (800) 474-2782.

Boating Info:

There are several ramps available for public use. (see map).

Fishing Info:

There are salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout, striped bass, shad, sturgeon, catfish, bass, crappie, and bluegill here. Because most of the surrounding area is private, shore fishing is limited in this stretch. A boat is much more suited for fishing the deep holes and riffles anyway. Salmon and steelhead are usually taken backtrolling plugs or drift fishing roe from an anchored boat. Best times for salmon are Aug. - Nov., steelhead Dec. - Feb. Rainbow trout can be taken year-round from Anderson to the balls ferry area on flies, lures, and other baits. American Shad are also a popular catch in the lower section around Red Bluff and Dairyville. May - July are the best times for these hard fighters. Striped bass can be caught from the Red Bluff Diversion dam and downstream. Best times are March - June.

  • Record King Salmon: 88 pounds, caught in 1978 below Red Bluff.
