Gold Lake

Location and Directions:

Latitude: 39.668 Longitude: -120.661

    Gold Lake is located in Sierra County and is part of the Plumas National Forest. From Sacramento take I-80 East past the city of Truckee to Hwy 89. Go North on 89 past Valley Ranch. Turn Right on Gold Lake Hwy., just before Graeagle.


General Info:

    Gold Lake is the largest lake in what is known as the "Lakes Basin Recreational Area", set at an elevation of 6,400 feet. There are actually more than 50 small lakes and streams throughout the area, some of which can be driven to, and others are only accessible by hiking trail. The area is open year round for fishing, boating, camping, hiking and hunting.


Camping Info:

    Camping is available next to the boat ramp. There are 37 tent and RV sites available. $10 per night, first come first served basis. There are also many other campsites located throughout the area.

Boating Info:

    There is a public boat launch and rental boats are available at the marina.


Fishing Info:

    The CDFW stocks rainbow trout during the summer months. There are also brown trout, bass and catfish in here. Ice fishing is allowed in mid-winter when the ice is a safe thickness (4 inches or more) to walk on. Be sure to visit the CDFW web site for complete regulations before heading out.



Comments and Tips:

     Gold Lake Rd. is closed during the winter. Access to the lake at this time is restricted to snowmobiles only.
