Siamese Fighting Fish in Fairmount Park lake!

I was bass fishing at the park and I found a guy that was trying to net wild Bettas. He had one in a jar and was looking for more along the Dexter Drive Cypress Tree roots. He said that they make bubble nests to lay their eggs in, and that's what he was looking for. The fish did not have it's beautiful colors or long flowing fins like you see in tropical fish stores. He said they have reverted back to their "wild look" in the lake, since they have been there for several years now. Someone must have let their pets go into the lake, and they have breed and multiplied there. Crazy stuff!

And that's how we get invasive species in our waters. It's not a "Free Willie" thing to do..........

looks like a female betta or a shortfin male... i'm guessing female as the coloration is not that vibrant. i used to breed betas.

The photo here is just one I found…But the fish in the jar looked exactly like this..

I was once fishing a city park and an Arawana (spelling?) was chasing a little plastic swimbait i was throwing. Another time this Asian dude in a minivan pulls up, takes out a 5 gallon bucket with these 3 large bullfrogs, throws them in, starts chanting buddhist style w. rosary beads in hand for 20 minutes, then takes off. A couple weeks later i caught one of those bullfrogs...it ate a plastic i was throwing.

I wish...those things probably fight better than bass and they go after topwater lures as well.

I heard a similar thing about Puddingstone a number of years ago, monks putting lampreys into the lake. They didn't survive, thankfully. Always wondered where you would get live lampreys.
