    Default Dana point harbor 2/9

Text Convo on my way home from work.
Me: I was thinking about making halibut for dinner tonight, problem is I’d have to catch one...
    Her: Sounds good

Well conveniently I had my gear in my truck still from my last adventure, I only had an hour to fish and hadn’t caught a legal halibut in 8 months but I wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to try. I worked the edge of the jetty near the bait barge, missed several bites in the dirty water, was getting kinda pissed and thinking of changing out my bladed A-rig but my persistence was rewarded.

22” on the nose, I had to measure it 3 times to be sure. Crazy day, no expectations, “huge” results. Haha
I hope this buys me a few more fishing pit-stops in the future.

    Nice job.

Do you mind posting a picture of you bladed A-rig?

    Respect!
What pound test line are you throwing? Would be interested in lure as well.

I use a Yum flash mob jr. tied straight to 50lb braid.
1/8oz Kalins darter heads on all 5 snaps, I'll throw 1/4oz on the bottom 2 if fishing deeper water 15ft+
For swimbaits i use swimming superfluke jr in pro blue red pearl(#1 choice), white ice or smokin' shad depending on the water color.
other baits i like are yum pulse minnow, and lunker city swimming ribster.
(3.8 kitec works great too but more $$)

Really any bait that swims well at slow speeds in white/light colors or natural baitfish patterns will work fine.

Thank you! Do you get hung up much? I have several umbrella rigs but haven't thrown them much due to snags in the salt.

I have lost a couple to the rocks when trying to parallel the jetty rocks, bad idea, but I was also using 20lb mono leader at the time. Usually the hooks will bend out or the wires will when using straight braid. If you fish sand ledges and eel grass flats you will catch just as many fish and rarely lose a rig, especially with the straight braid.

Use the A-rig anywhere there is sparse or no rocks. weedless swimbaits will catch just as many fish when they are ambushing from heavy/rocky structure.
