WATCH OUT FOR DEER!
Don’t forget that jacket!

It’s THAT time:
WATCH OUT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD

Don’t forget: THE CAFÉ (AND ONLY THE CAFÉ) WILL BE CLOSED SEPTEMBER 22 TO 24, 2017. The Store will be open AND Boat Rentals will be available. The Café will close for the season on Sunday, October 8. Not sure about boat rentals and the store – depends on the weather.

I do declare Fall is here. Had our first – summer is over – first fire in the woodstove Saturday morning – sure felt good although once the sun hits the front windows, the building heats up quite nicely. There’s more and more color popping up – over by Jack’s Bay, down by Sabrina Camp, back by the Inlets, some up on the side of the mountains and even by the front door area. And, believe it or not, we have a slight chance of s-n-o-w in the forecast for Thursday. Yup, it’s Fall!

Don’t forget, we’ve gone to our Fall hours:

The catching part of fishing has slowed a bit, although the fishing part of fishing is still going gangbusters – just might have to spend a little more time doing the fishing part to do the catching part (can you tell it’s been a looong season) Fish the Inlets with NightCrawlers, PowerBait, MiceTails or Jigs. Troll leadcore with Thomas Buoyants at 4 – 5 colors. If using monofilament, try NightCrawlers or Lure with a bit of red on them around the rockpiles or shorelines. Drift the rockpiles with NightCrawlers or PowerBait. There’s a bit more room for shorefishing as the Lake is starting to drop – might have a go with NightCrawlers, PowerBait or Salmon Eggs. Fish over on the far side of the Dam by the outflow with PowerBait, NightCrawlers and MiceTails. There are still lots of dam fisherman as that’s one of the easiest accessible fishing locations. Got a good stocking of DFW fish on Friday.

Lance Benson was mentioned in last week’s report catching 2 2-pound Rainbows, but alas, forgot his picture. Gary and Gary (Father and Son) Blackford used a NightCrawler to land a nice 2-pounder. Serrin Jarvi caught a 2-3/4 pound beaut using a TroutTeaser. Caleb Lewis had the BIG fish catch of the week – a 3-1/4-pounder using a NightCrawler. Robb Goff, Ethan Faller, Jaiden Faller and Liz Lopez made their first trip to Lake Sabrina – made lots of memories – their comment “Definitely won’t be our last”! Robert Wagner caught a 2-1/2 DFW Tagged fish back at the Inlet.

So now we come to the weather forecast – a bit of a change coming in on Thursday. The weather guessers at NOAA are calling for the high temps to be in the low 60’s thru Wednesday with the lows into mid to upper 30s, then the change starts. Temps on Thursday are expected to be in the mid-40’s (yup – you read that right) with a slight chance of the white stuff on Thursday and Friday. The low temps drop to the upper-20s. Temps start a slight rebound on Saturday with the highs in the low-50s and the lows in the low-30s. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.

Keeping this info on the report:
It’s a pet peeve of mine that if you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.

Not many issues lately with skeeters and with the cold temps coming in, probably won’t need the bug juice, but when using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands. If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –the snow and sun makes it pretty bright against the blue sky. DON’T FORGET THAT JACKET.

People, sure would be nice if y’all would pick up your trash when you leave. It’s really not that hard. Just sayin! If you need something to put it in, come into the store and we’ll give you a bag.

If you’re hiking stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And you might want to hike with a buddy. Too many search and rescues this year.

Fishing etiquette is becoming a bit of a problem at the Lake and we don’t like problems. If you come upon someone fishing, please don’t fish right next to them – take a bit of hike farther down and don’t cast over into their spot. Same at the Inlet, there are so many areas to fish on this Lake go find another ‘soon to be’ favorite spot.

Safe travels.
