After it appeared, the Heritage Foundation's communications office contacted us to argue that our rating of Mostly True was too generous to the president. We did some additional reporting to review our ruling. Our second round of reporting -- primarily talking to conservative policy experts outside of Heritage -- solidified our initial conclusions. Below is the updated version of our story, which retains the rating of Mostly True, published April 26, 2010.

So essentially, it's "Mostly True" that the idea of the individual mandate was conceived by the Heritage Foundation.

However, we heard from nine people affiliated with conservative policy organizations other than Heritage who thought that the president's statement was reasonably accurate.

Seven of them declined to publicly express their differences with Heritage for fear of making waves within the tight-knit conservative policy world.

Apparently the editors got it wrong by focusing on all the 'bites' and concluded the statement is "Mostly True" then.

You should write the Pulitzer Winning newspaper, just like the Heritage Foundation did, and try to reverse their analysis.

Haha, or so you thought. I'm a member of the Heritage Foundation, and have been for many years. Here is the true and un-spun position of the Heritage Foundation regarding health care. I would post the entire PDF file or the links entire content, but the mods here would freak, so here is the link. If you are truly concerned about our nations future regarding this issue, please click and read all the sections and links provided. This is a game changing issue that could and will permanently damage our CONSTITUTION BASED FEDERAL REPUBLIC, so please educate yourselves on this matter. Comparing health insurance to automobile insurance is a bogus argument. My health insurance is not going to pay for your care if you get a cold, flu, aides, or any other kind of disease from me or my family, yours is. My automobile insurance IS going to pay for your damages if "I" cream you in an accident, that's called liability, as you should well know. I don't have a beef with paying for my OWN healthcare, it's paying for OTHERS I have a problem with. Why should I pay for an alcoholics, a drug addicts, any extreme sports participants, people who live horribly unhealthy lifestyles, freeloaders who don't pay any taxes ever, etc. etc. Remember, nearly 50% of earners PAY NO INCOME TAXES, and they will not have to pay for the "health care tax", the other 50% will, and that's ok with you? I have my own insurance and insure my family of 5, always have. So rest assured, you won't be, or haven't been paying a red cent towards mine or my family's healthcare, including my disabled wife. My B.S.? I stand by what I said, this will destroy our country in the long run. Why do so many of you want to follow the same failed path of European style socialism? Do you not understand what is taking place over there? Do you not watch the news? Have you not heard of the multiple bailouts taking place there? Why do you think those country's are fiscally failing? Hint, it ain't George Bushes fault. Ignorantly call me names, tell me I'm full of Shyte all you want, in the end, you are the ones who are going to pay dearly for your mistakes in the loss of your freedoms and liberties. By the way, do you comprehend the damage this will do to small and middle businesses? They aren't going to hire because they won't be able to afford the costs. They'll do part time workers and pay the penalties, it'll be cheaper...

I didn't mean your B.S, HZW, what I was trying to say is that holding folks accountable - that is to require them to have insurance so that the rest of us don't pay for their emergency room visit - seems like a GOP ideal to me.

I didn't have time to read the all 5 pages of posting, but I wanted to point out that the Federal Gov can't make force each state to participate in the plan. States still have a choice to participate or not. If they don't choose to participate they will only loose funds allocated to that state by the program and will not incur any additional penalties or fines if they don't. Several states already came out and said they will not support the program and as a result the plan will not generate as much funds as expecting causing more states to drop out until it's eventually dropped.

Yeah, let's take Texas for example.

24 million residents, 28% uninsured, great job there Perry, which equates to nearly 8 million people without health care.
Since there is a 16% poverty rate, let's say there are nearly 4 million people who really can't afford it.
That means nearly 4 MILLION Texans could afford insurance, but choose not to have it. Yet, they still have a right to seek ER care at the expense of who? Oh yeah, federal taxpayers (because TX does not have state income taxes) who send billions each year to support Texas' hospitals.
Yeah, I think it is pretty clear why they have no incentive to get insurance or expand medicaid.

Why?

They would have to shoulder their own costs.

I thouth texas did have income tax. You just didn't have to pay it if you made less than a certain amount of money. One of my cousins told me this either last year or the year before last, cuz she makes less than like $45,000 a year or something like that. And i think $45,000 is the limit. But i could be wrong.

Texas does NOT have a state income tax at all. My oldest son lives in Texas and my wife and I will be leaving of Friday for a family reunion in Texas. Texas does have sales tax and higher property taxes to make up for the loss of a state income tax. DMV fees are much, much less than California. Also hunting and fishing licenses are really cheap also.
