    The real way to tell the difference is to count the number of dorsal spines. White Crappie have 5 or 6 and Black Crappie have 6 or 7. I think I have caught White Crappie in several places (Isabella, Cuyamaca and Bass Lake come to mind) but I keep forgetting to count the number of spines. White Crappie tend to be a little paler and grow larger than the Black Crappie.
