Rockaway Rods Have Been Around For Over 5yrs Now From Okuma!
Okuma's Director of Product Development John Bretza came to Hawaii to attend the Izuo Brothers Product Show in 2019. He had Okuma send a bunch of his new Rockaway Surf Rods ahead all with 4K Azores Spinning Reels. Little did the anglers of Hawaii know of the spinning trend John & Okuma was going to impart to Hawaii's shoreline anglers!
Waimea Bay that morning was pumping 12-15ft so after an hour getting pounded we went South to calmer waters. It was here that i caught a papi'o "whipping" soft lures attached to a Hammer Bomb cast assist device from Bill Newton of HiFishGear Hawaii. This was the birth of Rockaway Rods in Hawaii now called Rockaway Surf Rods. It encompasses not only the original Rockaway Surf but Rockaway HD, Rockaway SP & the Nesika Surf Rods.
It is hard not to find a local Hawaii angler that doesn't have a Rockaway Rod in their arsenal. It was 1st made for the Sea Perchers off the Oregon coastline & somehow found it's way to the Aloha State where it is a popular "whipping" rod (spinning rod).
