Thread: Hawaiian Gold! Golden Jack Trevally!

  1. #1

Default Hawaiian Gold! Golden Jack Trevally!

    Pao'pao in Hawaii!

The Golden Trevally is a much sought after rarity. Feeds primarily on crustaceans. Has human-like molars for "crunching" shells of crabs, shrimps & lobsters. Because of it's highly rich food intake the meat of this fish is extremely oily, rich & savory. They habit coastal shorelines & estuary areas often hugging the shorelines looking for crabs. My underwater video may be the only video depicting how this fish feeds.

They go vertical to "blow" water streams on the sand to reveal crustaceans. The large pores above the lips are sensory organs that help detect the crustaceans. Often you see other predatory species following them to pick-up their scraps. They're several of these pig-lipped trevally species know locally as "Buta-guchi".
