Permits and boat rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. We are credit/debit only, no cash transactions. We do not sell fishing licenses so anglers must obtain them elsewhere prior to their visit. The lake offers $25 full day motor boats to seniors (60+) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military every Saturday.

To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water. The lake will close for fishing and to the general public on weekdays, as it does every year, after Labor Day beginning Sept. 5th

Catfish can be found throughout the lake, but are particularly active near the west buoys. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. Bluegill (or any fin fish) alive or dead are not legal bait in Southern California as they are considered a game fish. Likewise, canned corn is also illegal bait at Lake Wohlford because some species of fish in the lake are unable to digest it and if there is too much of it floating around in the water it can end up killing fish.

Small to medium sized bass are being caught primarily around structure. Mike Hernandez of Valley Center caught a 6.10# bass on a jig near the west buoys. The bass are hitting frog poppers, crawdads, and dark colored plastics.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
