they were back on track north this am

water dropped a few degrees but was still purple

they are metering bait but not much on the surface

a few spots of yft's again not much except mola's and mako's

he told me the highlight of the day was seeing a big spot of foamers and after running up to it
it was a few thousand sealions heading to japan
said he had never seen a herd with that many animals in it

they are looking for bait and bf tonight

i will let you know how it went after i talk to him in the morning

July 4 just came and went, so where are this alleged Albacore?????? Historically if you are going to get a good run on Albacore, it's happening on the 4th of July! I can't tell you how many times I left on the 4th of July night, to fireworks in San Diego bay on my way to the Albacore grounds! The other tradition I have is to fish for Sand bass and Barracuda on the Fourth in our local waters. This year I kept that tradition alive. Except the Local captains are so beaten down on any surface action in their local waters early in the season. They had no hope or expectations these things would be around on the 4th. They said the waters was too cold for any of that to be around, so we are going Scuplin fishing instead. Well we did that and then tried for some sheephead and whitefish. As a last thought, he went inside and tried a local spot they use to have Bass and Barracuda on them this time of year. Guess what, they were there!!!!! We didn't really have any time to fish them. But the very next day, some of the other local boats went there first and made a catch! So historical times sometime do play into things! So I'll end my comment with, "where are those stinking Albacore????" If they were going to show, it should be soon! Other wise it was just more wishful thinking! Which will happen again, the next time the water is a little colder then normal in the Spring!

    good buddy

the albies are about 80 miles outside of san martin and scattered

wasn't as if the spear carp hunter's didn't get them trolling home

isn't like there are not fish scattered spots between cedros's and guad

and it isn't like private boats looking for tuna haven't snaked a few below the border as they have

    just not big news

in the old days the hunt was on jan 1st to get the first fish of the year

whether heading out 200 miles or south to guadalupe

and back in the day when it happened and there was still daily fishwrappers to be read
it would have been headlines in the outdoor section of every one

the bottom line is for the longer distance search it just doesn't pen out for the long range cattle boats

    cost and time bottom line

nobody really wants a long boat ride for a few 15lb fish these days

like you said chief bluefin are the hot ticket these days

    but it is early
the water is still in the high 50's to low 60's

as more bait gets squeezed into the cooler water by el nino
chances just get better to see fish inside

it's all about wind and current
    time will tell

    newest update

the 2 tuna boats homed in pago i mentioned a while back are parked out near the cortez and hanging fish

my buddy gus told me that it was not great , mixed mostly 12to 20lbs

but that they were stacking enough fish in the freeze to keep hanging and hoping

water is 59 to 62 and holding under 65 all the way to clemente

purple with mega spots of chovies

100 miles or so to his west the water is 74+ and it's moving from the southwest towards the beach

said in the next few days he's looking to be seeing yellowfin and big eyes puddling more as they get pushed
    up from the south

will relay more as i hear more

    wind and current

a few fish where hung near the 43 yesterday

and more private boats are out looking today

    smaller 15-20lbs

marlin are also showing up in the area so there should be more eyes in the mix looking

comercial tuna boats are working anywhere from 100miles out to 800miles out with lots of big spots of yellowfin the whole way

that a few dozen where stacked by private boats looking for marlin and swords today early predawn bite
aprox 30 miles wsw from clemente

spotter planes are seeing a lot of tuna spots breezing
yellowtail, bait out by the tanner and below the border

    also second hand

heard that that paddy's are starting to get a few dodo's moving in for the summer

not munching on the troll or bait water is warm 70 or so from backside of clemente to the beach

those albies will be heading for shelter island sat morning so check then for some more info

a few more where picked up today between clemente and the cherry bank

a lot of breezing fish just not eating yellowfin with the albies mixed in
they told me noda on the bluefin

but a smidge of tailers and floaters

but the where inept and got mostly stiff necks from watching outriggers

the only good news was that if your into jack fishing lots of 20-35lb fish about 6 miles west of china cove

only albies i heard about today were from my pal gus and he moved out to the top of the spiess and that is a long way from the beach

    he said fishing was steady
    both yellowfin an albies
    water was 72 and clean
big push from the south with a nice 12to15 lump

and the weather is going to turn to crap for the next few days

he was heading into pedro to dump some fish and get some more diesel

but he was really thrilled about getting a new fishery's observer

he owes me a dinner so ill see him thursday

an get to hear first hand about the wonders of commercial fishing

but locally there are a lot of fish between south boronado and clemente

    quality fish
just hit and miss clean water
    downhill current and bait

    a lot of marlin
    not too many swords

next week and the new moon should lead to exceptional fishing
