In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
It has been an excellent week of trout fishing and it just stands to get better with next week’s larger than usual plant. Big trout of the week belonged to Kristin Martinez of Harbor City and weighed 10.70#s. The new contest leader was caught on a nightcrawler/powerbait combo at the east end of the lake. Other notable catches are Rosalio Flores’s 9.90#, Frederico Robles’s 8.90#, Fausto Saavedra’s 8.10#, Sean Frederick’s 7.70#, Vincent Senchan’s 7.70#, Aylin Perez’s 6.00, and James Piccirilli’s 5.40# trout. Powerbait (greens & yellows), inflated nightcrawlers, and chartreuse mini-jigs are what’s been working. They are being caught in Boat Dock Cove, Senior Shoreline, and Willow Cove.
The lilac is blooming on the adjoining hillsides which traditionally heralds in the start of the crappie season. Crappie prefer the cover of shade and bite best in the early mornings and late afternoons.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale.
