In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The trout have had enough time to spread out and are now biting in spots like Oakvale and west of Senior Shore that had previously been slow. Big trout of the week belonged to Sam Madamba who caught an 8.90# trout on a midge at the east end of the lake. Other notable catches included Robert Gregory’s 8.30# and Jon Hans 7.90# trout. As rainy conditions continue using bait that has scent on it improves your chances of success.
The Largemouth Bass are beginning to stir. We had several small to medium sized bass reported this past week. The bass are hitting jerkbaits, swimbaits, and dark colored plastics.
Black Crappie can be found in the cover of shade or rocky outcroppings. They respond well to mini-jigs or live golden shiners.
Catfish can be found throughout the lake and can be caught using cutmackerel, shrimp or chicken liver.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
