We are credit/debit only, no cash transactions. The coming of the new year is full of promise, but also brings a lot of expired licenses, don’t forget to renew your license before coming out to fish. We do not sell fishing licenses so anglers must obtain them elsewhere prior to their visit. The lake is offering half price motor boats to seniors (60+) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military every Saturday.
In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The trout have had sufficient time to spread out and are now biting in spots like Oakvale and west of Senior Shore that had previously been slow. Big trout of the week belonged to Joseph Dexter who caught a 10.50# trout on a Luck-E strike worm at the east buoys. The trout are currently biting for fly-fisherman on hook-up bait, or inflated nightcrawlers.
Largemouth Bass can be found lurking around structure. The bass are fond of swimbaits, crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Catfish are biting particularly well right now at the west end of the lake. Thien Nguyen of San Diego caught 31.30# catfish on shrimp at the West Buoy Line. Lake Wohlford cats prefer shrimp, mackerel, or chicken liver.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
