The long wait is almost over, only one more week until the Dec. 10th trout opener. The tradition of fishing for Rainbow Trout at Lake Wohlford is a long one, and goes back seventy years to the winter of 52 when the lake was the first in San Diego County to introduce planted rainbows. With 5,500 pounds of trout planted for the opener, and nearly 10,000 pounds more in scheduled plants set for the holiday/winter season, it figures to be one of our best seasons yet. So, for a bit of nostalgia, and some outstanding fishing, why not gather up the whole family and join us for a trout fishing excursion at the place where it all began?

Don’t forget after Dec. 10th we return to our seven days a week schedule and that means the return of senior days on Tuesdays and Thursdays when those 60 and above can rent an all-day motor boat for just $20.

Largemouth Bass can be found lurking around structure. With the re-introduction of trout to the menu this might be just the time to dust off one of those big swimbaits in the hopes of landing a double-digit bucket mouth.

In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
