In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The trout are plentiful in the shallows. Unfortunately, most appear to be succumbing to rising water temperatures and aren’t biting. Hoyt Curtis of Menifee had big trout honors this week with his 8.20# trout caught using a gold kastmaster in Oakvale Cove. Top baits include kastmasters, mini-jigs, and powerbait.
The crappie are being caught from shore in small numbers. Crappie are most often caught using mini-jigs and live golden shiners.
Largemouth bass are in tight to shore drawn in by the lure of the spawn and a great abundance of smaller fish. The bass respond well to senko worms, swimbaits, or anything that resembles a crawdad.
Catfish can be caught throughout the lake, but are most active at either end. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
