In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Fishing conditions in general are very good. We have reached that magical time in spring when all the different varieties of fish we have here at the lake are all active at the same time. The crappie and the bass are spawning, as are the carp. We are two weeks away from the final trout plant and the catfish are becoming more active as the water temperatures start to rise.

The trout are hitting in shallow water. Bob Camilo of Fallbrook had big fish of the week with his 6.70# rainbow caught using a mini-jig on Senior Shoreline. Top baits include mice-tails, mini-jigs, and inflated nightcrawlers.

The crappie are increasingly active and are being caught from shore. Crappie are most often caught using mini-jigs and live golden shiners.

Largemouth bass are in various stages of spawning with fry present from those that have already finished. They respond well to crawdads or dark colored plastics.

Catfish can be caught throughout the lake, but are most active at either end. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
