Okuma's Surf Rod & Reel For Day & Night Surf Casting!
My good friend Mark Gonsalves has been asking me about the Surf 8K Surf Reels. In fact quite a few have been asking me how good is this reel as a long distance caster? These long distance casting spinners holds an insane amount of line! I went with a 50lb monofilament top shot with a 65lb braid backing. Also 40lb max drag as well.
I own the Shimano equivalents, the Ultegras. The 5500, 10K & 14K. The 14K is more than 2x the price of this reel. My main complaint on the Ultegras is that extending spool shaft is awfully "flexible" under load when exposed during a strike. It wobbles from a sting ray hook-ups, but held on all. Some models do come with a free extra spool thats either a limited aluminum capacity or made of plastic (meant for the fresh water carpers).
On this full moon night i was lucky and caught dinner. A Moi "Pacific Threadfin". The fish only ancient Hawaiian royalty were allowed to eat. Not a large catch but still a good eating fish caught on a full moon. Because the 8K Surf holds an insane amount of line & allows me to cast far with a 40lb max drag at an attractive price puts this reel in my main arsenal of salt water shoreline casting.
