On Sunday Elliot Berquist of Escondido further cemented his spot atop the leader-board by beating his own lake record catfish with a 67.60# blue catfish which he caught and released using cut bonita at the west buoy line. This new catch exceeded the old record, which was set just six months ago, by about five pounds. Lake Wohlford cats are most frequently caught using chicken liver, shrimp, or cut mackerel.
Mostly small to medium sized bass being caught. Largemouth Bass can be found lingering around structure. The bass respond well to dark colored plastics, crawdads, and crank-baits.
Crappie fishing has been slow. Crappie prefer the cover of shade and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
