In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels there is a ban on private watercraft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Note: Due to the shorter days we are now closing at 6:30 p.m. Boats need to return to the dock by 6:00 p.m. The park remains closed to visitors and fisherman alike during the weekdays. We are still open on weekends. We will re-open for weekday fishing at the start of trout season, usually the second Saturday in December.
Fall is often a time of increased activity amongst the larger catfish. The cooling water temperatures appear to induce some sort of feeding frenzy in the larger cats. Maybe they feel a need to bulk up for winter. Whatever the underlying cause, the percentage of oversized catches seem to go way up each year at this time despite the fact that we are only open on weekends. Lake Wohlford cats are most frequently caught using chicken liver, shrimp, or cut mackerel.
Mostly small to medium sized bass being caught in modest numbers. Largemouth Bass can be found lingering around structure. The bass are hitting plastic frogs, crawdads, and jerk baits.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
