A lot of big trout being caught this week. The late bite is still outpacing the early one. Curt Masters of San Diego had big fish honors this week with his 12.20# rainbow caught on rainbow powerbait in Oakvale Cove. A very respectable second went to Doug Jenkins of Carlsbad who caught a 9.30# trout in Boat Dock Cove on a mini-jig. Oakvale Cove is the latest hot spot for catching trout and rainbow powerbait is the bait of choice.
As the water temperatures continue to climb, the bass are beginning to show signs of life. Largemouth Bass can be found lurking around structure. They respond well to crawdads, swimbaits, and dark colored plastics.
Small numbers of crappie are being reported by fishermen trolling for them. With the lilac beginning to bloom on the surrounding hillsides, the time for Crappie should not be far off. Crappie are most often caught on finger jigs or live golden shiners.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel, or chicken liver.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
