Thread: All you want Trout fishing at Lake Wohlford!

Default All you want Trout fishing at Lake Wohlford!

Trout fishing at Lake Wohlford from a boat is like shooting fish in a barrel! There is 2 main reason why I think this lake is the premier trout lake in Southern CA during the winter. The first reason is it's not very big and the trout generally go to only 2 places. (so it's easy to locate them) The 2nd and the most important reason is, it's well stocked for it's size. I'll let you in on the little secret on why it's so well stocked. The lake is sponsored by Harrah's Casino! That's right it's got a deep pocketed sponsor who helps pay for the fish! It's not run on a profit basis at all! So when we got there today our trusty rental boat had a brand new motor! The lake was stocked last Thursday and Tuesday of this week. So there wasn't any reason to get their in the frigid mornings. We got to the lake at the crack of NOON!!!

    On to the fishing!

Since we in effect were fishing 2 groups of freshly planted fish, they could be any where from the 2nd air ratter to the reeds in the East end. (I never fish boat dock cove, too easy!) When we got there the wind was blowing what I call the maximum you should go fishing in. (10 mph winds) You should always check the wind reports before you should go. (google Lake Wohlford weather and it will tell you everything you need to know) I had a bathroom pit stop before I hit the lake, so I had Phil buy our fishing permits and boat rental. The Ranger thought maybe it wasn't a good idea to rent a boat in the wind. I knew it wasn't going to get any worse then what it was now. So I might have had to negotiate with him, but Phil took care of it before I got there. (it was really good wind for drifting)

As I motored down towards the East end, I saw the boats scattered all over the place. (That told me the trout were every where!) So instead of sticking by the last air ratter and drifting West. I went right up to the East buoy's before we started drifting. I was right, we got our first fish within 5 minutes of drifting. We fished the standard Greenish Rainbow garlic power bait dipped in "bite on garlic sauce." #2 line a number 5 split shot and a number 16 treble hook. The fishing was pretty hot and heavy and we had half limits of trout the first hour even counting missing some bites. Some of the fish were a little bigger and I had a #3 pound hook jaw trout, try to pull my Barbie pole over the side. lol The next hour I finished off our limits just drifting randomly around. I did notice 1 fly boat was anchored a little higher up and he did pretty good. (I saw him actually get a triple on trout)

After we limited out on trout I thought we would do some drifting for catfish around the West buoys. (That was challenging!) It was a lot windier there then the East end of the lake. So I went to my back up spot for catfish above the doughnut hole spot. (it wasn't as windy there) As we were drifting along I saw a Bald Eagle fly down and catch a trout. (pretty cool!) When I got close to the boat dock cove area I got hit on my N/C pole. It was a decent catfish #3 plus and pulled pretty hard on my trout set up. We got a few more bites that didn't commit but we ended on a high sour note! I can usually tell a bite from a snag while we are drifting. A snag just pulls straight down and a bite rattles and is jerky. So when my pole just bent in half I thought I had a snag. (so I just went Duh!) Then it rattled rattled rattled! I was so dumbfounded I missed the bite! (it was probably another decent catfish) So that's how we ended our day!

    Thanks for reading our story!
