Default Free Lining For Rudderfish, Unicornfish & Surgeonfish!

Fishing On A Windy Cold December Day While Sick!

I spent my last few weeks sick due to the windy cold weather. But i still went out anyway today. Met my friend Jared who also was sick for weeks as well. No baitfish around & no big fish. Usually when the water is cold nearshore species usually head out for deeper water where it's slightly warmer.

Today only a few small fish which were released. Anglers who i met earlier said it's been slow the past few weeks. Usually reef fishing is slow during this time of year (thus the higher fish prices at the store). Jared did get a huge strike which he fought for over 10min. It was a huge Yellowfin Surgeonfish "Pualu" that broke surface before spitting the hook.

Going light is fun & often will result in catches whereas going heavy (like i was) means you either hook-up or you don't. But it also means snapped lines & hooks being bent out or chewed in half. This is because you're using lighter thinner monofilament line so the fish will have a harder time seeing it. Also small hooks may straighten out on heavier hits or will snap in half.
