That's true...i pulled a kid out two or three years ago. Last year I was about five hours late as they were pulling the body in when I came on scene. This year, coincidentally, was a kid memorial weekend who has a cousin at my school. Any more..im just going out to pluck people out of the lake if they need it or not. We will work out the details once I safely drop them off on shore

Good job on your good deed... That guy is lucky you were there..
As for the weekend.. If you go on a weekend you get there by 6 and get out by 930. Avoid the hell..
As for the fishing.. that's about as on par as the dam has been on any given day.. the dam is extremely up and down mostly down.. Summer fishing on the dam normally produces 5-7" summer baby bass..
It's all about the trees.. I was there today and we had 12 bass and 8 were keepers 15" or bigger but it was a complete grind but it's getting better... As the reaction bite and worm bites are both picking up.. we had about 3-4 missed opportunities as well.. fyi... All were deep tree fish today..
Don't give up on Perris.. Just don't go during Zoo hours..
I got to admit, Pete, your reports keep my fire burning. But your level of skill compared to my is like comparing the NFL to the senior convalescent home touch football game

Shadow....I for one always thought a report of a bad day is just as good or better as reporting a banner day. Look at all the Intel. When not to go??? Weekends. Where not to go?? Dam....Heck, maybe someday the stars will a line and I'll be able to report "what to do"

I was once was gonna do a tourni at perris. I showed with money in hand and was ready to pay up the tourni director. He took one look at me and my boat and pulled me aside. He told me my money would much better be thrown away at a casino where I at least had a snowballs chance in hell or I might be better served just giving my money to charity as I could write it off my taxes. I got the hint.

    HuskerRod,
That is a shame. 1st tourny I fished was back in 84. The U.S. Pro Team Open on Lake Mohave. We were in a little green bass boat with a 45hp Johnson motor on it. Must have been 16' if that. We placed 27th and won 240.00. Mr. Don Ivino congratulated us and said "it's not the size, shape or money spent on a boat the catches fish". No one should decide on the shape, size or condition of you boat if you can catch fish.

I've always said, and I'll say it now.. It doesn't matter how much your boat costs, how nice it is or the size of your motor. It doesnt matter how fast you get to your spots.. What matters is what you do once you get there..

I know, I know avoid Perris on summer weekends, but decided to head out late on Sunday to avoid the....ahhh,,,urghhh,,,,party. Hit the water to a madhouse. Parking lot practically full and tents lined up launch ramp to launch ramp. Noticed as i was pushing off i was getting a lot of eyeball attention. I suspect most were thinking, "what an idiot". I sort of got that feeling as well with the jet ski Olympics going on and the blazing heat. I sort of considered a trade...take my fishing boat and an agreed upon sum of money for a jet ski for an hour swap. But the guys on the skiis seamed to be having way to much fun.

In my infinite wisdom I headed for the dam to get some of that early evening shade with the sun behind the dam. Some where, some place Pete Marino is reading this and must be thinking," After all that Intel on the tree line and this guy goes to the dam". Halfway there a see someone frantically waving 50 yards past the swim beach buoy line. I Initually think it's one of the bathing beauties that regularly frequent Perris saying hello, but that never happens to me, It doesn't take long for me to get back to reality to realize it's a guy drowning hanging on for dear life to a sinking kayak with only the kayak point sticking out. The guy with no life jacket and fully clothed, tennis shoes included, had headed out in a borrowed kayak and was blowing out in to big lake and hanging on to what little of his kayak was still afloat. I Picked him up and towed in the yak. Guy did offer me free beers for my trouble, but I don't drink......but I probably should start to ease my fishing frustrations.

Start working the dam with a deep diving crank, minding my own business, when I notice a three headed object skimming across the water surface from about 100 yards out mid dam. I wasnt sure if I had discovered Nessie, a three headed duck, or what it was. As the shapes get closer it's a guy and two dogs on a swim. The guy must be a helluva swimmer because they were way off shore and right in the line of fire of ski boats, jet skis, etc. The guy and both dogs made it in w/o being killed and took off. Wonder how long u til we read about his demise. Decided the spot was probably toast with a swimmer and dogs trugging through so tried a few more spots for nothing.

The Cruz of the whole write up is all the new rules Perris has instituted with the high water. They hand you a hand Bill upon entry and it stresses "You have been warned". So evidently if you drown, get killed swimming in a non swimming area, or jet ski beyond jet ski hours like the pack of jet skies that buzzed me an hour after they were supposed to be off the water your liable.

As for the fishng, it was hot as he ll and lousy. Avoid the place on weekends at all costs. And maybe consider investing in a jet ski or hiring a guide cause I sure couldn't give you any useful intel on this day.
Uknow mister Rod I have said it once and I will say it again ... California Freshwater fishing is clinically dead! The absolute mismanagement and subsequent lawless nature of the enviroment serves a nasty cocktail of ignorant actions by the mega masses and it is really surprising that more people aren't shot in the head by other recreational activists while enjoying a day on the water or death by drowning isn't more common. Since my backyard lake is closed for some reason I've since bought a small catalina sailboat,,, Leased a slip at one of local marinas [location will not be said] and have since caught lots of halibut yellowtail sand, spot , calico bass,, corbina, croaker and well... Lots of fish without any drama from KOOKS abound. Congrats on saving someones life...Feels good to be a positive influence on the water.

Leash...we must have crossed paths many times. My upstairs home office window over views the DVL saddle dam. Heck, we are probably neighbors and I just figure you get up really early to go to work on weekends when in actuality your going to "the sea". But I must admit growing up fishing Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, and points in between the so cal freshwater scene leaves a bit to be desired. Sure, I put in a hundred hours or so last year, got a DD and a few other heavyweight bass, but the 99 hours 59 mi tues and twelve seconds when I wasnt fighting the big ones the fishing left a little to be desired. This year I just quit going. DVL is closed for the second month in a row. Perris can be great, but you better bring your "a" game and expect no gimmies. And watch out for that Ramona Expressway, my road to perris,3 deaths in one week last month has me pondering if the drive is worth it. Sure, the topography out here isn't great to freshwater lakes and 36 million people don't help with perris being second most visited park in the system. Sometimes I'm surprised perris is as good as it is. But all is not lost. Retirement will be here before you know it and I've already mapped out a plan which gets me as far from here as I can get. Also as a school teacher I have summers off. This year was getting ducks in a row. As early as next summer, if I so choose, I can spend summers some place else.
