Thread: Looking for some advice

    Default Looking for some advice

Teaching some cubscouts how to fish. We already went up to the trout pool up in the mountains and now they are a bit older and ready to do some real lake fishing. Any advice to help them get a few bites to keep them interested. These are 7-10 year olds so would be nice to have some action for them.

Thanks ahead of time any advice.

Drive to bishop. Go to lake Sabrina and fish the inlet. It’s an awesome hike.

How many are you taking and is fishing during the week a possibility in a few weeks?

get a lot of small hooks, small weights, bobbers and lots of worms. you can probably find some bluegill near rocks you can see offshore. you take a good pair of polarized glasses to help you see the rocks deeper. keep moving around if you dont get bites bluegill take at most like 5 minutes to bite but usually a lot faster. also take out plastic worms for if they catch some bluegills or dont want to and try to go for bass. if you go to castaic lagoon you should be able to find some bluegill and small baby bass like that. and might get some redears crappie or even big bass like that. ive even got small catfish at the lagoon like that. the key is keep moving to find the fish. even if you catch a few at some rocks the bite can die off so you have to move again. throw around to the right of ramp at lagoon and by the pillars and even the fishing pier. basically the advice should work on any lake right now. but i think going with light hooks and worms is a good start and as they get more into it they can try for the harder to catch big bass. though its all illegal now i was taught to catch the small fish then use them as bait though we cant do that it still good to teach. if in survival situation it will still be valuable. and we can kill bluegill and use them for cut bait for catfish we just cant use them as live bait for bass. though if you could somehow get shad from one of our lakes you can use them to catch big fish. you can just pinch off the barbs with needle nose pliers on the hooks to help the kids get the fish off a lot easier and even to help you get out hooks that get in the fish mouth and not the lip. i pinch off all mine. i rarely lose fish because of it. if you go with ultralights and 2 lb line they will have a lot of fun. the 3 methods you can do is fly line worms just hook and worm. drop shot or dropper loop style weight low and hook 1 -2 foot higher, and bobber with a hook 1-5 foot down depending how deep and a little pinch weight on it or not . you can also do challenge of trying to find a sharp hook some fishing line a worm and try to catch a bluegill without the stuff you brought.. its usually not as hard as you think and can help break up not catching.. just be careful of snakes like always. ive seen a few non poisonous ones lately and another guy i watch on youtube saw a rattle one near the upper one day tucked into the rocks but the birds were warning him..

Gear up with basic 6lb spinning gear. Night crawlers , sliding (1/4 oz) egg sinker, #4 wide gap wacky hooks, make a 2 1/2 foot leader using a leader keeper vs a swivel .
Cast at 10 o'clock and slowly work it in once it hits bottom. Cast from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock.
Work water from west ramp to main launch ramp to east point of main ramp.

Good luck and get them kids fishing !
