ALWAYS BRING A JACKET TO THE LAKE!

SLOW DOWN – THE DEER ARE ON THE MOVE!!!

Remembering those who gave the ultimate serving our country
so we may enjoy the freedoms we have today
May you rest in Honor and Peace

It was another typical Spring weekend at the Lake – breezy, sunny, cloudy, rainy and a bit of hail thrown into the mix. Looks like a few more days of possible ThunderBoomers and showers and then some awesome weather on tap (unless Mother throws us a curve ball). With the temp changes and moisture, we had a good rock slide just above the North Lake road and Hwy 168. It put quite the divot in the downward side of the road and broke apart a huge boulder. I’m sure it woke some of the Sabrina Camp campers and they were wondering what was heading their way!

Catching was a bit spotty on the Lake – some people couldn’t keep the fish off their hooks, while others had a bit of a tough time getting them to even look at their hooks and they were all using the same things - NightCrawler, PowerBait, Salmon Eggs, Jigs, and Thomas Buoyants. DingleBerry Inlet is still one of the hot spots along with the area in front of the Dam by the outlet. Got another load of DFW fish on Wednesday and there were those that couldn’t even wait for the stock truck to leave the launch ramp before fishing in the ‘trout pond’.

It was a team effort bringing in the 3-1/2 pound Rainbow with a NeedleFish – the Team Players were Kendyl, Josh and Conner Jenkens and James Robles – great job. Sam Sung used a Mice Tail to land his dinner – a nice 2-1/4 pounder.

Just an FYI – all fisherpeople need to have their own stringers and up to five fish per stringer.

The Eagles continue to entertain fisherpeople all over the Lake. Not sure where the Wrens went during the cooler weather, but they’re back and are continuing to add sticks to their nest.

The Skeeter population is ramping up again! Plan accordingly!

Like I said, a few more days of unsettled weather, then clear skies in the forecast. Temps look to be on the upswing on Wednesday to the lower 60’s for highs and mid 30s for lows with a slight chance of some ThunderBoomers. Thursday looks to be a bit cooler and breezy with highs in the mid 50s and lows in the low 30s, then temps are in the low to high 60s thru the weekend and lows are in the mid to low 40s. You can check out the forecast for the week at www.weather.gov (enter Aspendell, CA in the search and scroll down to see the temps).

And the hiking conditions:

Received this email & pictures regarding hiking to and camping at Blue Lake

Sabrina Lake Staff,

I had a great trip to Sabrina Lake last weekend. My three sons and I camped up at Blue Lake Friday and Saturday night (19th and 20th). We were rained and snowed on, but that didn’t stop the fun and experience up in the Sierra’s. I wanted to thank you for having this website it helped us plan our trip by watching the actual weather at the lake and see the snow on the ground. I attached three pictures so you can see the trail and blue lake status.

Here is a summary….

The trail is in good condition with a several sections where the trail is lost under snow (be careful not to get lost, we did, but had time to go back and figure it out). There are two areas of hard vertical snow climbing both are near the top entrance to blue lake, see attached picture. Those two areas have been tracked by a few hikers so the conditions are icy and slippery. I strongly recommend some type of crampon or make a new route (I slipped so it could happen). The snow is firm so you will not sink through as long as the weather is cold (like it was the weekend of May 20th). Blue lake is mostly covered in ice with some areas around the edges clear for fishing. During our trip we caught about 8 small brooks on wet flies picked up in Bishop (all catch and release barbless hooks). For camping, there are several areas clear of snow but be warned the ground is very wet from all the rain and snow runoff so be prepared. We also built about 80% of an igloo on the south end of the lake. It snowed on Monday and was very cold so it should stay for a bit longer. If you have time, make it up there with a tarp and sleep warmly in this nice igloo (maybe you can finish it). We didn’t finish it because the snow got tool cold and it iced up and we couldn’t make any more snow bricks.

Sincerely,

Kent Johnson

PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR ALL CONDITIONS.

Important stuff that just stays in the report for a bit:
People, sure would be nice if y’all would pick up your trash when you leave. It’s really not that hard. Just sayin! If you need something to put it in, come into the store and we’ll give you a bag.

If you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.

If you’re hiking stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And please hike with a buddy!

When using the bug juice or hand sanitizer or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like any of that foo-foo stuff. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands.

Make sure you wear some kind of sun protection – the sun and reflection off the water will do a number on your skin and eyeballs!
