Default Lake Sabrina Boat Landing - This Week's Report - 6-12-17

    Lake Sabrina Boat Landing

    June 12, 2017

The Cafe will be closed due to a scheduled
    SCE power outage on
    Friday, June 16, 2017

    The Store will be opened!

A bit on the windy side at the Lake this week and quite a bit cooler – 19 degrees with the windchill Sunday afternoon. Mother Nature just isn’t letting go of Spring. Remember that talk about the white stuff in NorCal – well, we got a bit of the white stuff here at the Lake – just flurries, but we had a fire Monday morning! Merry Junuary!

A bit tougher fishing this week due to the wind, full moon and whatever it was Ma Nature threw at us. Fishing the Inlets with NightCrawlers, PowerBait, Lures and Jigs. Trolling is on the upswing using Red & Gold Thomas Buoyants, Flashers (Dave Davis) with a NightCrawler or just a NightCrawler (don’t forget the swivel). Shore fishing with PowerBait or NightCrawlers. Drifting a NightCrawler around the rockpiles or thru the channels. If you have questions about your set-up, please come in and ask!

Had a few brave souls out in that wind. RT Smith landed a 3-pound Rainbow using a tried and true Silver Super Duper. Chris Gillette caught a nice 2-1/2-pounder using Green PowerBait. While Mike Levindofske brought in a 3-1/4-pound beaut using a Rainbow Rapala on the troll by the dam. Got Fish from the State on Wednesday.

The trail into Sabrina Basin still has snow on it. A report from a past Search and Rescue member and avid trail hiker – “The George Creek crossing is very dangerous and NOT recommended for children – one wrong step and you’re tumbling down towards the Lake. The Tyees Trail on the South Lake Road is also NOT recommended for children either as one of the creek crossings is about 3 feet deep and running hard and will continue that way for over a month. The Tyees Creek has also branched off and created a small creek running down the middle of the trail prior to the creek crossing.”

Speaking of creeks, streams and waterfalls that haven’t run in a while, there is a waterfall/creek that is running at the back of the Lake not associated with the DingleBerry Inlet that is running pretty hard. There is one running across from Sabrina Camp and running down the side of the road.

It was a windy cool week at the Lake, but Mother Nature is warming us back up for Father’s Day Weekend. Temps Monday start in the low 50s, but we’re up to the low 60s by Tuesday and into the mid-70s by the weekend. The lows start in the mid-30s and are into the mid-40s by the weekend. Check www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA, in the search field and scroll down a bit.

Sabrina Camp and Four Jeffrey both passed their water test so, yay, they’re open!

All three apples are blooming – CrabApple, Red Delicious and the Yellow Delicious!

On Friday, June 23rd, the chamber will host the SUMMER SOLSTICE DOWNTOWN PARTY. They're hopeful everyone will join in the fun! All local restaurants and shops are encouraged to stay open until 9pm and offer something special such as product demonstrations, discounts, food samples and live entertainment. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a raffle to win a $250 shopping spree at the chamber-member business of the winner's choice.

Important stuff that just stays in the report for a bit:

ALWAYS BRING A JACKET TO THE LAKE!

Watch out for Deer – especially during dawn and dusk.

The Lake has been low due to a concern for flooding in the Valley. The Powers-to-Be are trying to spread the water over the valley floor to replenish the aquifer and to minimize flooding when the run-off really gets going. Remember, too, we are a reservoir - we always start low in the spring as SCE uses water during the winter to produce electricity thru their hydro-plants and there is only snow falling. As we warm up, the run-off begins and the Lake starts to fill. We are usually at capacity at the beginning of July and stay at capacity during August. Once the run-off winds down, the Lake level starts to lower - and the water cycle of the Lake begins again. Hope this gives some insight on why there is so little water in the Lake. 😀

If you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.

If you’re hiking stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And you might want to hike with a buddy!

When using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands.

Make sure you wear some kind of sun protection – the sun and reflection off the water will do a number on your skin and eyeballs!

Some new faces with us this year.

    Safe travels.

Juanita, Rick, Patti, Len, Ginny, Dwayne, Jamin & Wade
