Lake Sabrina Boat Landing

Boy what a difference a week makes. The Lake has dropped by about 7 feet over the last week. The Powers-to-Be are quite concerned about flooding in the valley. SCE has opened all 3 pipes to empty the Lake in anticipation of a heavy run-off. Sunday morning at 6am, the temperature was 42° - with all 3 pipes open, we expected to have dropped another foot during the night – NOPE – pretty much stayed the same and the weather is just supposed to get hotter! We also have a bit of a chance of some thunderboomers and showers for the next few days. Not sure if we’ll have boats on the Lake for the Holiday Weekend. We’ve got them ready, now we’re just waiting for water.

There is currently one chunk of ice on the back natural lake sliding around in the breeze. It should not last too much longer with the warmer temps.

What could be better than two adult Eagles and a juvenile Eagle – how about another juvenile? Wouldn’t it be cool if the two juveniles Eagle hooked up? J The two adults are still giving us quite a show – sitting across from the Café or on what is normally the Island in a tree. One even decided to sit on the snow down by the Lake.

The catching part of fishing is still on the up side. Best bait right now would be the tried and true NightCrawlers although PowerBait is running a close second – try the kind with a bit of Garlic. Had some cowboys hike to the Inlet Sunday afternoon – caught and released over 45 fish between the three of them. Yup, catching for some is GREAT. Due to the snow and mud around the Lake, we’ve not been stocked yet, but that hasn’t stopped the catching!

Once again, we’re looking at some unsettled weather (meaning Mother Nature is still at it again). No snow this week, nope, this week Mama is throwing ThunderBoomers at us. ThunderBoomers thru Wednesday with temps in the upper to mid-60s with lows in the upper to mid-30s. Temps drop a bit coming into the weekend with highs in the mid-30s, but it looks like an awesome Memorial Weekend in store for us! Check www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA, in the search field and scroll down a bit.

Hard to believe Mule Days is coming up quickly – May 23 to May 28. Come early in the week for the competitions and demonstrations, and come back over the weekend for the great shows in the main arena. Check out the many western vendors and don't forget to stroll through the barn area for a close-up look at the beautiful, athletic animals. Saturday's parade down Bishop's Main Street is not to be missed! See you there; more info at http://muledays.org.

Important stuff that just stays in the report for a bit:

ALWAYS BRING A JACKET TO THE LAKE!

The deer are starting their Spring migration up to cooler areas, but they might be a bit confused with the weather. Had a report of a bear at the North Lake turn-off – yup, they are up and about.

Make sure you wear some kind of sun protection – the sun and reflection off the snow will do a number on your skin and eyeballs!

Might be a while before the hikers can get in – the Sabrina Basin TrailHead is still under about 2 feet of snow. There is also a good drift on the trail across from the Café where an avalanche came down in the winter – looks like about a 10’ drift.

Some new faces with us this year.

Safe travels.
