Need Help IDing this Species - Also great sesh to start 2017!
Hey guys, had a nice session this morning to start my 2017 fishing journey. I pulled up this fish that I can't properly ID. I wanted to call it a sargo but it almost looks like a surfperch too. Anyway here's the pic:
Anybody know what this guy was?

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. He must've felt threatened by my LC and attacked it, because I read online those things are herbivores! He put up a strong fight, too. I thought for sure I had a legal checker on, then was pretty surprised to see him come out of the water.
My friend and I also landed 4 calicos that morning, all in the 11-13 inch range. Watching the sunrise, tasting the salt spray on my lips, getting my line wet and landing some fishies... hell of a way to start a Saturday!
And, no I didn't bother eating him, @Ifishtoolittle! I've never bothered keeping any variety of perch as I've heard there are a lot of bones to contend with.
