Default Lake Wohlford press release 3/10/17

    Date: 3/10/17
    Park hours: 6:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. 7:00 beg. 3/12 (Open seven days a week)

    Dock closes: 5:30 P.M. 6:30 beg. 3/12

Last Plant: 1,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 8th.
Next Plant: 1,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 22nd.
    Water temperature: At surface 59.90 f., 12.92 D.O. @ 10’ 59.36 f., 13.16 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.

To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The lake is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesday and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Permits and Boat Rentals are now being issued at the Ranger Station. At present we are limited to cash transactions only. We do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle so anglers must acquire these essentials elsewhere prior to their visit.
The lake is still heavily stained from all the rain which is hampering the trout bite. Big fish of the week belonged to Ken Culkin of Oceanside who weighed in a 7.95# trout caught on sherbet powerbait off Twin Peaks. Conditions should improve dramatically in the coming week as the water clears.
Largemouth Bass can be found around structure. They respond well to frogs, crawdads, swim-baits, crank-baits, and dark colored plastics.
Catfish, unlike trout, relish the muddy conditions being less reliant on sight to find food. Lake Wohlford cats like chicken liver or cut mackerel. Inquire at the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well on both catfish and carp.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
