Default 1st legal of the year

Well, it was lunchtime and I figured the fish were hungrier than me.
IN previous outing the butts were active but all short so the hypothetical ratio was in my favor for getting a bigger model.

Got to a local hole that someone described as " there have been halis here back in the good old days" and I could see why- good habitat but lots of grass moving by short-period swell and current. I brought a new LC - that's more hooks that I'm used to and 9 of 10 casts would rake grass. The ones that did not were great. First I bring in a 21 "- incher , and 20 min later got a nice set but it looks like it is the same fish.. yet it was bigger and taped at 23.5. I did not bring any halis home last year and just about released this one too but figured I'll run back and drop it in fridge and post a quick report with new dinner plans in mind for the night.

It sure looks like 2017 started as a good old surf fishing year. Hope it stays that way.

And the birds were out there in crazy numbers again. Some smaller birds (than seagulls), couldn't tell what they were, would fly along shore in flocks several miles long, them would get on the water and it looked the ocean is boiling.
Halis I got coughed up large anchovies. Surprisingly clear water after the rains, and I've been hearing striper talk around here but did not see silver in the water ...yet.
