Default .....and Newport Harbor this week

This weeks fishing was the same as last week, good current movement but warmer water. Started at grey light and hit the Halibut spot hard for 3 fish up to legal. The Spotties were on the chew in the morning and managed about 12 in the first couple hours along with the Halibut. The fishing spot died out so hit up the Bait Barge and it started out OK. As the day progressed the water warmed up and the Calicos came out and were up high off the bottom as the bait was swept in with the current. The Barracuda and Bass fishing was good throughout the day ......you just had to blindly fan cast in all directions and eventually you'd hook up. I learned something valuable on this day. The Sea Lions only prefer to eat the Barracuda over the Bass. I haven't had the Sea Lions eat any Bass that I drop in the water or even chase the hooked Bass but when I hook a Barracuda they are all over it. I've been careful to not fish for the Barracuda when the Sea Lions are near by as they will take the fish and my $15 lure with it. It happened earlier this year but I got lucky and got the lure and the mangled fish back after chasing it down and pulling hard. The boiler rock outside the harbor did not produce today as the waves were small. One of these days I'll fish further south when I feel like changing it up. For now the Harbor is full of bait and the bite is goooood!!!
