if you do stand a chance at bottoming out with your downrigger weight, set your brake so the drum will spin so you don't loose the entire rig, or rip off part of your gunwale / transom. I also use rubber bands instead of clips with certain baits and certain fish. Half hitch the rubber bands to your line and downrigger line and your good to go. Braid is the way to go like T.O. said, it gives off less vibration and less blow back. If your after lakers, I like to bounce my downrigger ball off the bottom at times, on purpose. It works wonders on them and gives them a trail to follow. Works like a charm on lake michigan.

Wow. Lots of replies. Sitting here at the outlet store in Camarillo shopping with my girlfriend. This post is saving me. I am gonna order this weekend for sure. Can't wait to get on the lake and try it out.

Listen to Bob he knows his stuff. I still use wire but my dr's are electric. i also only use stacking clips. i got tired of lifting the ball out of the water so now i just attach a stacking clip to the line just above the weight snubber that way i never have to bring in the weight until i am done. i use offshore tackle planner board clips, yellow for trout and black for when i am pulling a urig. They are the same clips that Seps uses but i buy them myself and rig them up. The trick is to learn to run the downrigger and the boat at the same time.... have fun.

good idea on the stack up. I just bought these. might be a beginner buy, but that's what I am. thanks to everyone for chiming in with some great advice. Might have to book a trip with Bob to see how to do this. Might be a very cheap lesson.

There are other products but I've been running this gear at DV/Skinner/BB/Perris for years-no issues. IMO the Cannon release is a POS. Good luck on trolling it's addicting when you can get those rigs down near the marks.
