Default Capsided boat with deaths... Catalina island 06/25/16

    CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. (KABC) --
Three people died and four others were hospitalized after a boat capsized off the Catalina Island coast Saturday morning.

Authorities received a call around 9:32 a.m. on reports of a capsized boat with people in the water. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, several agencies and a Good Samaritan rescued four people.

Coast Guard watchstanders received a call from a vessel called Pacific Quest, reporting that a 15-foot skiff with seven people on board had overturned near Salta Verde Point on the backside of Catalina.

The boater recovered four of the seven people out of the water and two were unresponsive, the Coast Guard said. Another crew rescued another person from the rocks and took them to Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Another officer located another person on the beach.

The Coast Guard then launched a 45-foot patrol boat, a helicopter and received help from multiple agencies to search for any other victims.

Two of the survivors are in critical condition and two are in fair, authorities said.

The county coroner's office later identified the deceased victims as Kyung Kim, 47, of Los Angeles; Jason Noh, 62, of Buena Park; and Young Park, 64, of Los Angeles.

The skiff overturned after being hit by two waves, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The waves were reported to be between 4 and and 6 feet along the island's coast, the Coast Guard said.

One has to ask why there were that many people without life vests in a fifteen foot skiff on the Catalina backside (can be considerably rougher inshore because of the open ocean swell). Did they motor all the way from Avalon or from the backside Cat harbor? Wonderful that so many were saved but once again.....but what the heck were they thinking?

It's a tragedy for sure and a front-runner for the 2016 Darwin Awards, I just hope they didn't rent that boat from an island concession. Surely they didn't cross the channel in that little thing, though.

Korean men by the names and locations. If it was a whaler 7 passengers are allowed and can be seated ok.
But if fishing or with scuba gear.??? That's a whole lot more weight and different story. No one wearing vests or too late to grab and strap on???? Condolences to those
    Involved.

A tragedy for sure but then we kill a half dozen every year here on Lake Powell due to nothing more than stupidity and alcohol.
