My wife and kids went to the Malibu Beach today, she said they saw a pod of whales
very close to shore having a good time. She said the surfers were out father than the whales.
The question I have is this common for whales to come so close to shore?

Fourth or fifth time I've heard about it in SoCal since January. More common then you might think.
They had a large gray whale right off the Redondo pier last week.

I saw a Mama whale & her baby, apx 100-150 yards off shore this morn'n, head'n north @ a pretty fast pace.
All through that area they cruise along the kelp patches and sometimes stop (rest? feed?). Seeing them 20-30 ft away really brings their size in perspective. I fish there on a 9 ft surfboard and they will rise between me and the beach in 20-25 ft of water. I saw 3 pairs 2 weeks ago (last report here) but about this time last year the whale traffic was unbelievable: - I'd heard them spout around every 20 min so after awhile it just became a part of the fishing scene.
We watched them at Will Rogers last week while we were soaking bait for batrays. They weren't in that close but still put on a show for us............Verne
Whales are amazing animals and are always great to witness!
