    Default Rpt.-WFO Local Bass 01-27-16

It was both Lal’s and my first time fishing in 2016. Not because we didn’t want to go out sooner, only because Lal’s Ducky was in the boat Hospital, having blown the lower end of the Yamaha 60, among other issues. As for me, I just could not find a good opportunity elsewhere.

So we went fishing Wednesday 01-27-16 on Lal’s 18’ boat the “Rubber Ducky” along the Palos Verde Coastline. We launched out of Davies in Los Alamitos at 5:30 am. The temp in Lal’s truck read 48 degrees, yikes!

The wind in the harbor was not good, easily exceeding 10 knots. Not a good start to the day. Fortunately, as we reached the end of the harbor near San Pedro, the outside ocean was flat as a Pancake. We continued on toward the Palo Verdes Coastline in grease conditions and at nearly full throttle, reaching 29+ knots of speed, a few knots better than the Ducky’s previous best.

    The sunrise was spectacular:

    Catalina was very visible:

We reached our starting destination a little before 7am. The meter was on fire and the fish were on a serious chew. It was a fish every cast for a solid 30 minutes, as we caught and released over 40 Bass in this short time. It was about 75% Calico Bass to 25% Sand Bass.

The Calico Bass were very healthy looking:

Take a look at the fish meter; are there a few fish on the meter:

By 8:20 am we had released over 60 fish and by 9am 75. The Sand Bass started to chew and they were a bit bigger than the largest Calico Bass:

    This brute exceeded 4 pounds:

Lal’s Sand Bass was also 4+ pounds:

By 10 am we had exceeded 90 fish released. Could we hit that magical 100 number? It had been two years since we last exceeded that number and interesting enough it was also in January. The primary fishing area we had such success in had turned to straight Mackerel. We looked at a number of other spots, however the current was nonexistent and the fish had lockjaw.

We worked hard for the next few hours and caught a greater mix of Rockfish than Bass. We added some dozen Johnny Bass and another ten assorted Rockfish to our count before reaching the 100 level for Bass. What a way to start out 2016 fishing! Just sensational. You just never know. Water temps averaged 59.5 degrees with a high of 59.9.

    A few more Pictures:

Incredible weather and outstanding fishing wow! We were on the trailer at 2:15 pm, with still little wind on the horizon.

Thanks Lal, what a day, and how great it was for the rebuilt engine to perform so well!

    Hook up! Cory
