Default Tenkara fishing san gabriel river at seal beach rivers end cafe

I had planned fishing a park lake in IRVINE but the gate attendant informed me no fishing. So i drove to Seal Beach and walked over to the San Gabriel River mouth ... saw plenty of Mullet jumping...Rigged up my Tenkara "yamame" with my 14 lb line and 5x tippet. Tied on a chartreuse fly and began casting. I was only up to my knees wading in the very warm water. So some small fish following my fly I think were Smelt. Worked upstream with many casts but nothing biting. On one cast saw something brown and speckled following my fly towards me. Never saw what it was clearly and continued to cast. I stayed about an hour and nothing yet. Overall it was a learning experience. Next time i will bring more streamer type flies with a bit more weight.

Sounds like maybe you had a small flattie take interest in the fly you were dragging. Good times. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the fishing report!

Better luck to ya the next time you go out for a session Sir!

By reading your report I can definitely tell that you know your way around a fly-line! .... So it's just a matter of time!

Let's hope that brown thing was a fish. LOL!

Thanks for the report. I've heard of halibut, sand bass, and croakers to be the common catches in the river.
