Thread: Kayaking & 'trolling'

    Default Kayaking & 'trolling'

My wife and I are thinking of kayaking Silverwood in our tandem kayak. Driving by it the other day, we saw a lot of power boats.

Is this a good lake to fish if we keep closer to the shore and visit the coves?
And are there particular coves that we should consider kayaking?

And while kayaking, I'd like to have a line in the water. So if I want to troll, any suggestions as to what to use while kayaking?

We pass by this lake quite a bit but have never kayaked or fished it. We would love to start visiting that lake more often.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would recommend Miller cove (to the right of the ramp) and Cleghorn (to the left) for yaks. They are no wake, 5mph zones. Paddling the main channel could get choppy especially late in the morning as the lake lice arrive in force, but there are a couple of coves along the channel that are buoyed off for no wake (ie, fishing).
I would troll some cranks or flukes and maybe hook yourself a lineside while you're a paddlin'.

Thanks! May I ask what is 'lake lice'? I assume you meant something else but can't quite figure it out...

Thanks again. Keep the comments coming - love to hear more comments.

What JAG107 said. Kayak it often. Try near the bouy line in Miller for stripers early and late, bait is small right now but lot's of fry in the water. I would argue that 4" swimbaits are not the way to go at this time of the year, try tiny flukes or other imitations of larval size shad or silversides. No offense to the master!

this what the 4inch swimbaits can catch you ,two recent trips with clients, each trip a d/d hit the deck and caught several more fish,,,,,,,,not all the shad are tiny right now and the big fish look for the adult shad..............

This I will try tomorrow, Master T/O

2 skunks in a row for me is a first and unacceptable. Death will come swiftly to the striped devil tomorrow, by the grace of the trolling gods!

Bob, absolutely there are bigger shad if not then where did all the baby's I'm seeing come from? At Silverwood I go smaller early to mid summer but I am not a troller, prefer other bites. To each his own, go fish have fun.
