    Hello all,
New to the surf fishing but easily addicting! been a couple places here and there but next week my family is camping along Rincon Parkway ( hopefully if I get a spot) looking for a little help or tips. I only seem to be able to catch these little perch, 6-8 inch range and wonder how to catch different species or maybe larger perch? my boy gets a kick out of it and loves to try and find me the soft shelled sand crabs for bait. He has caught a couple of these little fish too but asks me where the bigger ones are... lol Is there a bait and wait I should be using? I see a lot of lures in these pictures but not sure what they are. what is too big or too small to use? Any help or 2 cents would be appreciated! thanks

So I'm pretty new to the surf fishing game too, but I've had some decent success using these things called "LCs" for Halibut and Calico Bass. http://www.luckycraft.com/luckycraft...innow110sp.htm

Also people use swimbaits like these, but I haven't tried them yet: http://www.cabelas.com/category/Unri.../104162580.uts The advice I've seen is to rig them with a 1/4 to 1/2 oz swimbait head, you can can get weedless ones too.

Look for ones that are colored like the local baitfish, so smelt, grunion, anchovy colors for the LCs and I've heard that red ones are pretty lethal for the swimbaits.

I've read that if you can get ghost shrimp that they are a great general bait that most species in the surf will strike.

Also, there is a grunion run anticipated next week. My wife and I went out for the last one and killed it rigging up the live ones on a carolina rig w/ 1/2 oz. egg sinker and about 18 inch leader. The only thing is that the grunion run really late at night, so I'm not sure if your young ones will be able to stay up one more or nights. They say the best nights are the second and third on the anticipated schedule. http://www.californiabeaches.com/201...-run-schedule/

    Good luck out there!

When they are there they are there or not ! Used to camp there by the first wall for years in a trailer, and
usually by the first sea wall coming south from Hopson campground, and caught some decent perch off that
wall on any high tide . Also, if you can get mussles you can get some big one,s just before Emma Woods
Campgrounds. you can also get some clams on a real low tide.of coarse that was 10 years ago, don,t know
    now .?
