Default Monte Carlo outside the Shoe. 5/13

3/13 not 5/13. Went on the 10:00 - 4:00 Monte Carlo out 22nd St Fri the 13th. Light load about 20 anglers.
New regs allow 60 fathoms instead of 50 fathoms as of last week. Cappy went deep over 300'.
1 fathom is 6' so I was hoping the old Cappy had some spots he'd been itching to go to.
No such luck except for some nice PB Sand Dabs about 12". We hit 4 spots some small rockfish and big Dabs.
Then Cappy went shallow and some nicer grade rockfish came over the rail about 120'.

I picked up a old school rail plate 2 clamp with 4 wing nuts. Worked great for fast winding I think
I was the only guy with one. Eliminates the rod rocking movement for fast reeling.

5 pound reds! West or North West Side of Santa Barbra Island! This area may be a fish refuge now. 60 to 80 phathoms on the underwater structure. Deep yes but that is where those folks live. Been there done that when I worked on a commercial rock cod boat.

Rail plate, I have and use 3 of these tools. When I was out at San Nicholas last December I saw no one using these helpful items but me. I just purchased a new level wind reel Squall SQL30LW with a higher gear ratio 4.9 to 1 so I can get my line in faster because the boat gets moving fast once the anchor is up. I will be using braid on this reel. Out on the Native Sun 2 weeks ago and wished I would have had the rail plate and the higher speed reel.

Thanks for the report and i will be out there again soon.
