My dad was in the coastguard in the mid fifties 1st place he was stationed was alaska they did some fishing there then they sent him to san francisco were his duty was to huntdown awall sailors .
then he was off to hawaii and was aboard the uss tenny the tenny was at pearl harbor and was able to shoot down the first zero during the battle so while he was in hawaii it was good times he told me the locals would see you in uniform with the patch you were on the tenny or any other ship and treated them like family .
a couple months later he shipped off to the marshall islands the captian and some of the crew aboard this cutter were hardcore fisherman they would troll for tuna all the time they could while taking care of thier coast guard duties of weather observation then to the island of ebeye a small island with only 10 coast guard guys and about 50 marshall islanders .

Dad got to know some of the people there and during his free time would go with them on fishing trips catching tuna and reef fish some nights they would go out on the reef and get lobsters which he said was like picking fruit one night he got bit buy a morrey eel .
he would also fish off a pier there and sometimes get tuna and mahi off the pier .

somedays they would be out on the cutter for weather observation mainly for wind speed and direction they would hold in a quad and drift to the far end and troll back and try for some fresh dinner.
these were the times of the Atomic tests at enawetok atol during one of the tests operation ivy they grossly underestamated the yield of the bomb it was so powerfull it changed the direction of the winds for a week and ebeye island got fallout and the crew were exposed to radiation he was only there another month before his duty was over then back home to los angeles

That is fascinating! Amazing stuff! You should write a book about all those adventures. Seriously! Thanks for sharing and God bless. -Mark
