From time to time, a special moment will occur during an event that will completely shape and mold the rest of our event season. And today was one of those days.

Over 290 anglers came out to the Sport Chalet Free 300 presented by our company, Lip RipperZ, Inc. By far one of the highest turnouts for us this season, which was definitely great to see. The theory behind the event was to enable every angler attending to leave with some kind of great prize valued at $5.00 or more, FREE just for attending. Prizes ranging from $5-$200 gift cards to Sport Chalet, fishing poles, reels, lure kits and even a $300 Sea Eagle Kayak. An event where you can come out, have fun, not have to worry about catching a big fish for the day and still be able to leave with a monster prize. For those big fish and money hungry anglers, still allowing them to join an optional $50.00 high roller buy in to suit their needs.

By noon, three fish had already hit the scales, each weighing in excess of 7 pounds, with numerous stories of 10+ pound monsters being hooked and lost. However, it was Julio Urrutia who stole the limelight as he proudly displayed his event winning 9lb 5oz trout that he caught early in the morning and held as the top contender through the end of the day. Not only was Julio’s fish the first big Trout to be brought up to the scales early on, but his fish would ultimately won him the “Biggest fish caught on a Lip RipperZ product” award, winning him a $300 gift card to Sport Chalet, as well as the top honors in the $50 high roller event, collecting an extra $325 cash to top it off.

As the day grew long and the ceremonies grew closer, we knew we had a monster task ahead of us giving away over 300 prizes in the raffle, something we have never had the pleasure of experiencing until this year. The raffle began and angler after angler walked away with smiles and they picked up their free prizes. As they did, seminar speaker and Lip RipperZ Pro Staffer, Mark Franco, proudly kept them busy giving away all of his Trout fishing tips and tricks. With topics ranging from ‘how to drop shop trout worms’ and ‘how to fish with Hatchery Dust’, anglers were sure to walk away with the knowledge needed to hook that elusive lunker trout during their next visit.

To cap off the ceremonies, all big prizes were given away by pointing out the true Lip RipperZ fans in the crowd. The first 4 anglers to stand up wearing a Lip RipperZ T Shirt each walked away with a cool $25 gift card to Sport Chalet. Two $50 Sport Chalet gift cards were quickly handed out to two more fans, followed by an honorable gesture from the $100 gift card winner, from an angler named Matt from Riverside. After being the first to shout out the name of a specific Lip RipperZ products line, he quickly decided to donate the winning card to a kid in the audience. A noble gesture indeed. The big $200 Sport Chalet gift card was handed out right after, followed by the Sea Eagle Kayak, to two lucky anglers.

As the ceremonies wound to a close, we high fived and reminisced about the day’s activities. But there was one moment that each of us felt highlighted the entire event, a moment that will set the tone for future events. It wasn’t the monster fish, it wasn’t the high roller big tournament cash, it wasn’t the raffle prizes, nor was it the featured giveaways that made the day. It was the smiles on all of the kid’s faces that we were able to take fishing for the day courtesy of Phil Friedman and the PFO Youth Fishing Foundation. Phil had brought out 23 kids to the event, kids that have never had the opportunity to go fishing, and made sure each had the chance to have their first fish hookup in life. Quickly followed by their very own moment of stardom on the ceremonies stage. A moment so heartwarming, we plan on shaping and molding the rest of our events this season around children and teaching them to fish.
