What about with a top shot?

So on the ocean its all about the braid with a top shot for swim baits.
Throwing $100 plus swim bait I am iffy about braid at all. I have done it with cheaper models, but I am leaning towards strait 25 lb mono or a 20 foot mono top shot on braid just so there is no issue with splicie knots or the thin braid wrapping around the tip unknowingly during the cast.

In that latest west coast big Baiters footage it looks like all mono is being used.

I also noticed most swimbaiters use the larger round reels and thats probably because of the 25+ pound monos larger diameter. I only use braid because I'm using a curado 301e but will upgrade reel size and use mono from now on.

But I also like the no stretch of braid for good hooksets.
I guess its a trade off.

Depending on if you have a spool of braid with a little off the top, you can always take a 1/16" off and add 50 yds of 25 lb mono on the 301e to see if you like it.

You can fill the 300e with 115 yds of 25 pound mono

fish bones... give 15# xxx a shot with that bait! no braid no top shot just straight xxx

I use a 300 e and 300 ej and have the e loaded with 20# xxx and the ej with 30# xxx and have no problems... you could load some braid as backing but I would make sure to put at least 50-75 yards of mono or co polymer on top of that... with big baits the less the knots the better I think
