Thread: Fern Lake

    Default Fern Lake

Anyone ever fish Fern Lake? It is up the trailhead above Silver Lake. Walked up there once, but it got dark quickly after I was there. Loose about 1.5-2 hours of light at the base of that mountain. Someone said that they used to stock all of the upper lakes by air years ago, and that the pilots did not know which lake was which a lot of times so they all had fish. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Fished it last summer with my family in tow, must have been early august. Non-stop action on smallish brook trout. A few small rainbows also mixed in. Basically we just toss fly & bubble combos, don't remember what patterns we used.

    Mike,

The trail to Fern is BRUTAL, and the fishing is only so-so at best. The trail sign says the hike is about 1 1/2 mile, but years ago, someone carved in a note that said "feels like five miles".

It is a beautiful spot, but fishing wise, there are much better choices. Hike the trail out of Silver to Agnew, gem and Waugh. The fishing is much better there. Either that, or do one of the many hikes out of mammoth. Most of the lakes also produce pretty well.
