    Default DOMOIC ACID WARNING

EVERYONE CEASE COASTAL FISH CONSUMPTION FOR A WHILE, THESE MASS KILLS ARE FROM AN UNUSUALLY HIGH AMMOUNT OF DINOFLAGELATES. DONT EAT ANY CALIFORNIA SPINY LOBSTER OR SPIDER CRABS, AND AVOID ALL SHELLFISH! THIS IS WHY EVERYTHING IS DYING ON THE BEACH!

IF YOU DO CHOOSE TO EAT COASTAL FISH, REMOVE AS MUCH VISCERA AS POSSIBLE, AND CLEAN THEM WELL! DOMOIC ACID IS HEAT-STABLE, COOKING WILL ****NOT**** DESTROY IT!

IF USING MUSSEL AS BAIT, WASH HANDS, AND KEEP THEM AWAY FROM YOUR FACE.

THIS WARNING SPECIALLY HIGHLIGHTS ALL FORMS OF COTTIDAE(sculpin). DO NOT EAT THEM! YOU MIGHT GET EXTREMELY SICK! DO NOT ASSUME ITS SAFE BECAUSE OF THE ABSENCE OF A RED TIDE. MOST RED TIDES ARE HARMLESS.

Here is a link to a news story about domoic acid.
    http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me ... home-local

    It helps to look here.

    Or the CDC.

No need to start a panic. Does anybody know of anyone who has become ill as a result of eating or handling any of these products?

    What is domoic acid?
Domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin produced by microscopic algae, specifically the diatom species Pseudo-nitzschia. Shellfish and crab ingest this algae, where the toxin concentrates. Significant amounts of domoic acid can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in humans. ASP is transmitted by eating contaminated molluscan shellfish and crab.

How long has domoic acid been a problem?
In the fall of 1991, domoic acid was detected in razor clams off the coast of Washington. In that same year, DOH began monitoring all major shellfish growing areas for domoic acid.

    VS

Scientists suspect the upsurge has been caused by such things as overfishing, destruction of wetlands and pollution, all of which have harmed fisheries and allowed algae to flourish.
"I have been doing this work for 35 years and I have never seen anything like this as far as the number of species affected, other than an oil spill," said Jay Holcomb, director of the International Bird Rescue Research Center in San Pedro. Local beaches have been littered with sick and dead pelicans, sea lions and dolphins."

Funny how something that was first identified as a problem in 1991 can be twisted to a 35 year old problem.

While this post is relevant and fisherman should take it seriously, do not by any means take the article in the LA Times to be anything other than opinion based propaganda mixed with journalism!!! There is a reason that their circulation is in the toilet.

I think he was just stating his experience with dealing with sick animals.

No twisting. Domoic acid has been around for much longer than that, it's natural after all. They made the connection in 91' but animals have been dying on beaches forever.
